Class A RVs are the largest vehicles in the industry, offering the best interior space, most luxurious accommodations, and often, the highest price. This makes it extremely important to take the time to research the best models in the class before heading to a dealer’s lot to shop in person. Here are some of the things to consider before buying a new Class A RV.

Maneuverability

Many buyers think choosing the biggest, fanciest RV is the best choice, but that enthusiasm can fade quickly when trying to navigate a crowded parking lot in a hulking vehicle. Before you spring for a Class A RV, think about whether you actually need the extra space, and be honest with yourself about your ability to tolerate the sometimes-stressful parking lot maneuvers.

The same thing applies to highway travel. Today’s Class A RVs are designed to be smooth and comfortable on the road, but they react differently than passenger cars. Acceleration, braking, and turning take a lot longer, and large RVs can be affected greatly by winds and other environmental factors.

Campground Accommodations

While many campgrounds can accommodate any size RV, some may be too small for Class A models. The good news is that the larger RVs are designed to be self-sustaining, so you can get by for a few days without hookups—but it’s still a good idea to make sure your destination can accommodate your vehicle when you arrive.

Towing and Capability

Many RVers choose to tow vehicles behind their RVs for use when they reach their destination, so it’s important to make sure that the RV you’re considering can handle pulling at least several thousand pounds. That said, many of the higher-end models can pull 20,000 pounds or more. As with any trailer, it’s a good idea to take the time to practice and make sure you understand how the added weight affects your RV’s performance and safety.

Budget

Finally, your budget is one of the most important considerations with any RV purchase. The latest Class A RVs don’t cost as much as a house, but they are often more expensive than travel trailers and other vehicles. You won’t need a separate towing vehicle, however, which can save a chunk of money, and some people choose to spend extended periods RVing to avoid paying rent and other home-related expenses.
