Inverter Versus Converter: What RV Owners Should Know

RVs are built to bring many of the comforts of home with you, but the electrical system behind those comforts can be confusing. Two terms RV owners often hear are “inverter” and “converter.” They sound similar, and both deal with electricity, but they do very different jobs.

What Is an Inverter?
An inverter takes 12-volt DC power from your RV battery and changes it into 120-volt AC power. In simple terms, it lets certain household-style appliances and outlets work when you are not plugged into shore power or running a generator.
This can be especially helpful when camping off-grid, stopping overnight without hookups, or using select appliances while traveling. Depending on the size and capability of the inverter, it may power items such as TVs, small kitchen appliances, device chargers, or certain outlets. Larger power demands, such as air conditioning, require the right inverter setup, sufficient battery capacity, and proper wiring.
What Is a Converter?
A converter does the opposite job. When your RV is plugged into shore power, the converter takes 120-volt AC power and converts it to roughly 12-volt DC power. That 12-volt power helps operate many of the everyday systems in your RV, including interior lights, fans, the water pump, control boards, and other low-voltage equipment.
The converter also helps charge your RV’s house battery. While plugged in, you may see battery voltage around 13.2 to 13.6 volts because you are seeing converter charging voltage rather than resting battery voltage. To check the battery itself, unplug from shore power and test it after it has rested.

Why the Difference Matters
Your inverter helps you use 120-volt power from your batteries. Your converter helps your RV use and recharge 12-volt power when plugged in. One supports off-grid convenience; the other supports battery charging and everyday RV functions while connected to shore power.
It is also important to know what your specific RV is equipped with. Not every RV has an inverter, and not every inverter powers every outlet or appliance. Your owner’s manual is the best place to start, especially before assuming a microwave, air conditioner, or GFCI outlet will run from battery power.
What About Lithium Batteries?
Many newer RVs may be equipped for lithium batteries or solar packages. Some converter chargers include settings for lead-acid or lithium charging. Lithium batteries often require a different charging profile, so switching battery types should not be treated as a simple swap without confirming the system is compatible.
