RV Maintenance Items to Not Neglect

Jayco Eagle Travel Trailer RV

The key to a great RV experience is making sure your rig is in good shape every time you’re ready for an adventure. A well-maintained RV will keep you from unexpected stops and detours (some before you even arrive at the first campsite).

What parts of your RV do you need to keep maintained? Here’s a list of key items to take care of every time you hit the road.

Auto-Leveling System:

If equipped, you need to make sure that it works to ensure a smooth ride every time you take it on the road, as well as to maintain proper height when parked. This also includes the stabilizing jacks.

Melbourne Prestige Bathroom

Bathroom/Toilets:

They are different than the ones you have at home, so they need special care. Make sure that odors are eliminated from the holding tanks and that any waste is properly removed; clean after every use. Don’t forget to use the correct toilet paper for RVs, too!

Keeping Your RV Clean:

Your RV will encounter places where it will attract dust, debris, and contaminants. It is a good practice to clean your RV after every trip. Keep in mind that your RV’s surfaces may vary, so make sure you use the right cleaning solutions for the exterior – and the interior, too!

RV Cover:

Protecting your RV with a fitted and proper cover will ensure that the exterior’s finish will not fade and get damaged, including the tires, windows, seals, and any decals your RV wears. An RV cover is easy to install. If you’re not planning to use your RV during the winter, get one that will protect it from the weather.

Tires:

Where the rubber meets the road is the most important part of your RV. Make sure tire pressure is correct and that the condition of the tread ensures grip.

Water Tanks:

There are generally three holding tanks for gray, black, and fresh water. Make sure you empty these holding tanks properly and use treatments for each one. Also, make sure the holding tanks and plumbing are clog-free.

The following are key components that should be maintained on a year-round schedule. Intervals are determined by each component.

Air Conditioning/Climate Control System – every 90 days:

Keeping cool and warm is essential to enjoying your RV trip. Make sure to clean the filters, check the air vents for blockage, and install insulating window treatments. You always want to keep your cool during hot weather, so make sure the air conditioning is working right for you.

Awnings – every 90 days:

Not only do they keep the sun away from your RV, but they also protect you from any kind of weather. Make sure they open and close properly every time you use them. If needed, any repairs should be done by one of our technicians.

Batteries – every 90 days:

There are multiple batteries that help keep your RV running. They operate the kitchen, bathroom, electronic accessories, and the inside lights. Make sure that the batteries are charging properly. Clean the terminals and check the condition of the cables running to them.

Seals – every 90 days:

Your RV is full of important seals that help your RV handle weather changes and maintain proper temperature. You should have the seals around the doors, windows, and slideouts checked to make sure that there is no water coming through them, causing damage.

Anode Rod – seasonally:

An anode rod is a sacrificial element that attracts corrosive chemicals to keep them from damaging your water heater tank. Some RVs have this as equipped. If an anode rod is diminished, it must be removed and replaced. If you do not have an anode rod in your RV, the water heater system should be properly drained and rinsed seasonally.

Water Filters – seasonally:

Make sure the water tanks are in optimal condition and clean, checking the filters. Replace or sanitize seasonally to make sure they operate cleanly and optimally. It is best to do this before winterizing your RV. Please make sure you use the proper solution to ensure that the plumbing inside your RV works every time, even after you de-winterize.

Winterization and De-Winterization – seasonally:

Some RV owners do not use their motorhomes or trailers during the winter months. Winterization is a process that ensures the cold season causes no additional wear, tear, or damage. Remember, winterizing is essential to protect your plumbing lines, tanks, and fixtures from damage in extreme climates. When you are ready to get back on the road, do the complete opposite, replacing necessary fluids (including antifreeze) and making sure it is ready for the next trip. A technician can do this for you, as well.

Heating Systems – annually:

Heating systems and furnaces inside your RV usually run off propane. They also run on DC or AC power, as well. Have these items inspected annually to make sure they properly work. That includes the propane lines. Since some of this work may be labor intensive, have one of our technicians do the inspection and any work that needs to be done to these systems.

Bungalow Kitchen and Living Space

Refrigerators – annually:

To keep your food and drink cool and ready to serve, the refrigerator in your RV is a key component that needs to be checked. Lately, refrigerators are running on the 12-volt cycle, making them easier to maintain. It is best to have one of our technicians do the inspection and any repairs on your refrigerator.

Roofs – annually:

Did you know that the roof of your RV could be made of rubber, fiberglass, or aluminum? No matter how your roof is constructed, get it inspected for seal wear and possible leaks. Make sure they are cleaned, too!

Slideouts – annually:

If your RV is equipped with a slideout, be aware of wear and tear on the slide mechanism that allows the floorplan to expand for a larger bed or more space overall. An inspection and test of the mechanism should be done every year – preferably before and after you winterize your RV. It is best to let one of our technicians work on your slideout unit.

Wheel Bearings – annually:

No matter if it is a motorhome or a towable camper, the wheel bearings must be inspected. If they need greasing, do so with a proper greaser. If they need to be replaced, use the proper bearings, and don’t forget to repack them with grease. One of our technicians can do the work for you.
