When building your RV, the manufacturer makes sure that it is protected from the elements. Gaps, openings, joints, and junctions on exterior panels, doors, windows, and external accessories mounted on your RV all need to be protected and leak-proof, which is why manufacturers use sealant.
Sealant protects the most sensitive parts of your RV, but sealant itself is exposed to weather, humidity, moisture of all kinds, direct sunlight, and the wear and tear from traveling. It is essential to perform regular maintenance on your RV’s sealant, as sealant that is cracking, voiding, and deteriorating renders itself ineffective.

Like sealant, seals also deteriorate. Valley RV Supercenter recommends that all exterior seals are inspected at least twice a year. If possible, you can inspect them on a more frequent basis, depending on your travels and where you have visited, especially if that includes more humid and wetter locations. You need to check the condition of the seals on the roof, windows, and door frames, as they are prone to higher stress based on use and exposure to climate. You should be looking for any seal voids, cracks, shrinkage, or any signs of deterioration due to sun exposure and age.
Repairs are something you can do yourself. When it comes to sealant repairs, you will need to get a caulk gun, silicone sealant, and alcohol for cleaning. Start by removing any old or damaged sealant (without damaging the surface underneath). Then, clean those areas with alcohol. Apply a bead of silicon sealant using a caulk gun. Overlap the silicon for a watertight seal. Gently smooth out the new sealant to make it look clean, making sure there are no gaps or missed sections. Inspect your work to make sure that the new sealant is even and smooth.

The roof may be a bit more challenging to work on. If you are unable to do so or if conditions do not allow you to do the job, let the Valley RV Supercenter service center do it for you. Our service center is available for sealant and seal inspections and repairs.
Your RV’s sealant and seals are keys to longevity, as water intrusion can be a game-ender for your RV. A well-sealed RV is a happy place to set off for the next adventure.
