It’s tempting to purchase the largest, most robust travel trailer you can afford, but that’s not always the best idea. Large, heavy trailers require large tow vehicles and lots of fuel to move. The good news is that you can get a spacious, comfortable travel trailer that doesn’t break the scales.
Lightweight trailers are far easier to tow than heavier trailers, making them great options for beginners and people who don’t want to go over-budget upsizing their tow vehicles. They are easier to maneuver, though many travel trailers can still be quite large, so it’s important to plan your route ahead of time. Finally, lighter trailers place less stress on the engine and powertrain components, helping to preserve fuel economy and lessen the wear that comes from heavy towing.

You’ll still need to think about things like the number of people who will be traveling with you and the types of camping you plan on doing. Regardless of the weight, your travel trailer must still offer enough space to accommodate your guests, and it won’t do you much good if it’s unable to reach your campsite. This is also true for road-trip travelers, as some trailers are so heavy that they become difficult to tow up long grades, such as I-70 through Colorado or I-40 through the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.

Jayco offers a range of lightweight travel trailers, ranging from smaller four-person rigs to more robust ten-passenger options. Some of the trailers check in with weights as low as 2,900 pounds, but even the heaviest Jayco trailers can be towed by today’s full-size trucks. Each model also offers customizable floor plans that allow buyers to configure their trailers in multiple ways.
Being lightweight doesn’t mean being stingy on features, however. The Jay Feather offers a spacious kitchen with stainless steel appliances, including an 11 cubic-foot refrigerator. It also features large windows with reflective shades, a 14-inch power roof vent, and more. Buyers have multiple configuration options, including bunk beds, sofas, and more, but the trailer is roomy and feels upscale in all setups.
