Top Tips for Maintaining Your RV

Buying an RV is one of the most exciting moments of your life. Whether it is your primary vehicle or you’ve been saving up to buy a recreational vehicle for occasional travel, maintaining your new vehicle becomes one of your most important tasks. Valley RV Supercenter has compiled a list of tips to make sure your RV stays in tip top shape during your ownership.

Change RV Tires and Trailer Tires

Tires Are Important to Check Regularly

No matter if you’re planning a trip or your vehicle’s been sitting idle and waiting for the next adventure, it is paramount that you check your tires regularly for anything from swelling and dry rot to nails and screws that could make driving dangerous. Make sure when you are parked, especially for long periods of time, to cover your tires to ensure they don’t get damaged. Make sure to check tire pressure before embarking on a trip. Rotate your tires at regular intervals to make sure they are wearing evenly. If you hit any big bumps on the road you may want to look at having your vehicle’s alignment checked, which can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars on unevenly worn tires. Also, don’t forget to check your spare tire.

RV Brake Check Repair

Take a Look at Your Brakes

Along with checking your tires, you should also take a look at your brakes before any trip. If you feel comfortable, you should check and lubricate your wheel bearings while checking the life of your brake pads and rotors.

RV Cleaning Check for Roof of RV

Don’t Neglect Your Roof

You may not think about it, but the roof is something that can be costly to repair. This is why you should take the time to ensure water isn’t puddling in various spots, inducing leaks. For smaller leaks, you can use a sealant that is meant for the roof’s material. However, if you have bigger leaks, speak to a specialist.

A Healthy Battery Will Take Care of You

How old is your battery? Most will last anywhere from three to five years, but that’s not always a guarantee. You can check the voltage of your battery by simply putting the probes from a voltmeter or multimeter onto the corresponding positive and negative terminals. Anything below 12.6 volts means that the battery is getting close to needing replacement. At 12.2 volts the battery only has a 50% charge, and below 12.0 volts it is no longer healthy.

Don’t Forget Those Filters

During your normal maintenance routine of fluid flushes and oil changes, you should get in the habit of checking your filters. This includes the fuel, air, cabin, coolant, and hydraulic filters.

RV Wastewater Maintenance

Check the Wastewater System

If your wastewater system is bad, then you are in trouble. Be sure the chemicals you are using are the correct ones for your system. Use the proper amount of fluid for the system to ensure it runs properly after flushing. Make sure to flush it regularly, as the system can easily become clogged and potentially fail.

Make Sure Your Awning Is in Good Shape

Your awning is a prime spot for mold and mildew if left unchecked, which can be frustrating to get out or will cost hundreds to repair or replace. This is also a good time to see if your awning has any rips or tears. There’s nothing worse than trying to relax under your awning on a sunny or rainy day only to realize you have a rip right above your head.

RV Lubricate to Seal from Leaks

Check and Lubricate Your Slide-Out Seals

If you have a slide-out, make sure the seals are lubricated and in good shape, as these are areas that normally wear over time. While you’re lubing things, give the sliding mechanisms a little love, too, as they deal with a lot when in use.

Maintain a Good Connection to Your Tow Vehicle

Last but certainly not least, if you tow a vehicle behind your RV, make sure to check the connection that goes between the RV and your car. If it’s not working properly, then you need to repair or replace something that could be expensive. The connection serves an important role when it comes to your tow vehicle displaying turn signals, emergency flashers, and brake lights.
